How Powerful is Yoshi?

Before I begin:

It should be noted that there are technically two different "main" Yoshis that are referred to as "Yoshi". There is, of course, the one from the Yoshi's Island games from when Mario and Bowser were babies, but there is also one born as a Star Child at the end of Yoshi's Island DS. Given the Star Children are "destined for greatness" it is likely that this is the one that grows up to be Mario and Luigi's friend in the future, instead of the one from the Yoshi's Island games.

However, technically the Yoshi games don't all have the same Yoshi. Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island DS take place on Yoshi's Island, but Yoshi's New Island takes place on Egg Island located in the skies above Yoshi's Island. Woolly World and Crafted World also take place on their own islands disconnected from the rest, and some Yoshi series games take place in the present day, like Yoshi Topsy Turvy, implying this is Star Child Yoshi instead of the other one.

Surprisingly, it is very complicated. Barring any possible time travel options (though the Mario series is no stranger to that concept), it’s basically impossible to determine which Yoshi is from which game and limit him like that. So instead I will be using a composite of every Yoshi throughout the Mario series, as whoever the “main” Yoshi is should likely be capable of anything the others are.

However, there is one exception to this. I will not be including anything the Yoshis from Super Mario Sunshine are capable of, like shooting juice to turn enemies into platforms. This is because the Yoshis in that game were created by Shadow Mario and are not natural. That is why they melt if they fall into water. Other than that though, everything else is fair game.

Oh and I should probably cover what I am determining is canon and non-canon to the Mario universe as that can be a huge debate in what counts and what doesn't. I am going to keep it simple and not go into detail about why I believe these series are canon, I am just going to give the list right now. Maybe I will explain in detail at a later date.

Canon:
  • Main Mario platformers (including both Mario Makers)
  • Yoshi series
  • Luigi's Mansion series
  • Donkey Kong series
  • Wario series (Land, Ware, and others)
  • Mario & Luigi series
  • Paper Mario series
  • Mario Kart series
  • Mario sports series
  • Mario Party series
  • Mario + Rabbids duology
  • Mario vs Donkey Kong series
  • Dr. Mario series
  • Any other various game that can reasonably assumed to be canon (like Super Princess Peach, Super Mario RPG, etc.)
  • Super Mario Adventures comics
Anything not listed here, such as Mario & Sonic, Hotel Mario, any of the cartoons, both of the movies, Mario-Kun, and more that I'm probably forgetting, are typically portrayed as non-canon as they clash with the established universe the canon has set up. Nothing from those will be included.

Also, both remakes and their original games will be considered as long as they don't change things too drastically. Super Mario 64 DS specifically actually has a reference to the original with Koopa the Quick recognizing Mario from a previous adventure while in the original he had to introduce himself. Official guidebooks, manuals, and encyclopedias will also be included, unless they stray too far from the source material.

Alright, with that out of the way, now we can get into it.

Background

Born as one of the seven Star Children (probably), T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas was always destined for greatness. He lived a peaceful life on Yoshi’s Island with his fellow Yoshis, when suddenly a baby fell from the sky and landed on his head. This was Mario, and he was on a mission. Linked to his brother through some kind of twin sense, Mario started to crawl towards King Bowser’s Castle in the middle, but the Yoshis knew he couldn’t do it alone, so they banded together to help Mario get to the castle. There Yoshi took down Baby Bowser, saved Baby Luigi, and became Mario’s friend for life. He has since assisted Mario on more adventures, taking down bosses and saving babies while carrying him on his back. Later on, while he was working as the Chairman of the Dino Chamber of Commerce, Yoshi was reacquainted with Mario and Luigi, this time as an adult, when they fell from a warp pipe in the sky. Yoshi would save them from an angry Wiggler and assist them in taking down Bowser, saving countless Yoshis from hypnosis

Later on, Bowser visited Dinosaur Land, the archipelago that Yoshi’s Island is connected to, and trapped all the Yoshis in their eggs. Mario and Luigi, who just happened to be vacationing there at the time, saved them from their cage and defeated Bowser. He’s joined Mario on many journeys to rescue Peach and take down Bowser, and has appeared in every Mario Kart, Party, and sports competition. Yoshi never backs down from a fight, even facing larger-than-life opponents after seeing them eat his fellow Yoshis, though to varying success. No matter what though, he will always be right there in the fight against Bowser, right by Mario’s side.

Equipment

Eggs

Yoshi's eggs are his go-to weapons in any encounter, and for good reason. They are surprisingly versatile and deadly. Eggs can bounce off of anything, even water, and can bounce between enemies multiple times. His eggs have a habit of bouncing in unpredictable patterns as well. They have also shown to home in on enemies, explode on contact, spit out items like Mushrooms, and can even turn other things in its proximity into more eggs. Different colored eggs have also shown different properties when they hit an opponent. Red eggs give hearts to heal Yoshi, yellow eggs give Yoshi coins, and blue eggs give three more eggs.

However, Yoshi does not need to eat enemies to gain eggs. He has been shown to just summon them to him whenever he wants, including being able to encase himself and roll around as an egg, and has this rocket launcher-like weapon that shoots out eggs as well (While it is a Mario Kart item, it is exclusive to Yoshi so I feel it is okay to use).

Mushrooms

Yoshi can carry mushrooms around and use them whenever he needs to. These mushrooms have shown to heal him as well as grow him in size. There's also another mushroom Yoshi can use that makes him much larger and tougher, similar to a Mega Mushroom.

Yoshi's Fruit

Yoshi has a variety of fruit that he can eat in order to gain new powers or enhance his physical capabilities in some way.

Note: When I say "invincibility" I don't mean that he is truly invincible. I don't think anything is truly invincible as there can always be something stronger than it to hurt it. What I mean when I say something is invincible is that it makes Yoshi much stronger and more durable than before, to the point where nothing in his verse hurts him. So this isn’t me saying that Yoshi with these can tank any amount of damage no matter how strong, it’s just these items make him immensely stronger than before.

Watermelons

Yoshi also has several watermelons that let him spit/breath different things.

Koopa Shells

There are several specific colors of Koopa Shells that Yoshi can hold in his mouth to gain new powers.

Something important to note is that while a green Yoshi would need these specific Koopa Shells to gain these powers, Yoshis of other colors can gain their respective power by eating any normal shell. So a Red Yoshi would get fireballs, a Blue Yoshi would get wings, and a Yellow Yoshi would be able to shake the ground.

Caps

In Super Mario 64 DS, Yoshi is able to wear caps of different characters in order to turn into those characters. The caps Yoshi has access to can transform him into Mario, Luigi, and Wario. These versions of the characters are indistinguishable from their original counterparts, though their voice remains the same. Yoshi also gains any unique abilities they have, such as gaining Luigi's spinning backflip and running on water. It is likely that any ability innate to Mario, Luigi, or Wario can be gained from wearing their cap, though only a select few are shown. Yoshi is also able to start a level wearing any of their caps, meaning he should have access to them any time he needs to.

Power Flower

Also from Super Mario 64 DS is the Power Flower. This flower gives whoever uses it unique powers special to them only. If Yoshi gains the power, it gives him the ability to breathe fire. However, by wearing one of the caps while obtaining the Power Flower, the ability he gets changes depending on who he is imitating.

Rumblebangs

In Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, Yoshi has access to two types of weapons, the first being the Rumblebangs. The Rumblebang is a minigun-type weapon that shoots many weak shots of varying strength, all adding up to either below-average or above-average damage. The Rumblebang has two possible status effects it can inflict depending on the weapon. Freeze traps the opponent's head in a block of ice, preventing them from using any special abilities. Ink covers the opponent's head in a blob of ink, which prevents them from using weapons. With his special ability Super Chance, Yoshi can guarantee that he gets a critical hit, maxing the possible damage done and inflicting the desired status effect 100% of the time. Yoshi carries these in his belly and can bring them out at any time he wants. Here is a list of all the Rumblebangs available in the game.

  • Egg Creamer: The basic Rumblebang available at the start. Below average damage, range, and cover damage, and has no chance of inducing a status effect.
  • Last Dance: Has better damage than the Egg Creamer but still slightly below average. Average range and low cover damage. Has a 30% chance of inflicting Freeze, with a below average critical hit damage and a 60% chance to Freeze against Smasher enemies.
  • Bwahrmageddon: The same as the Last Dance, but can inflict Ink instead of Freeze.
  • Surly Temple: Has good damage output and critical hit damage, with a 30% chance to inflict Freeze. Same range as Last Dance and medium cover damage.
  • Crossfire Castle: The same as the Surly Temple, but can inflict Ink instead of Freeze.
  • Rainbow Roaster: The same as the Last Dance, expect with above average range, medium cover damage, and no added chance against Smashers.
  • Hostile Voxel: The same as the Rainbow Roaster, except with a chance to inflict Ink instead of Freeze, higher critical hit damage, and a 60% chance against Valkyrie enemies.
  • Calavera Cannon: Great damage, above average range, medium cover damage, and a 30% chance to Freeze with great critical hit damage.
  • Eye of the Kraken: The same as the Calavera Cannon, but can inflict Ink instead of Freeze.
  • Luau Launcher: The same as the Calavera Cannon, but with a 60% chance to Freeze against Buckler enemies.
  • Prey of Kitsune: The same as the Luau Launcher, but can inflict Ink instead of Freeze.
  • Golden Rule: The same as the Calavera Cannon, but with a 40% chance to Freeze against Mid-Bosses.

Rockets

The second type of weapon in Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is the Rocket. This is a long range rocket launcher-like weapon that shoots an explosive that, while not doing as much damage as the Rumblebang, creates an explosion that can attack multiple enemies at once and take out surrounding structures. These also have a chance of inflicting either Ink or Freeze, and these chances are once again guaranteed with Super Chance. Here is a list of all the Rockets available.

  • Supa Bwahzooka: The basic Rocket weapon. Below average damage and low cover damage, with the same long range as every succeeding weapon, and no chance of inflicting a status effect.
  • Brush With Mortality: Slightly higher damage that the Supa Bwahzooka but still below average with low cover damage. It has a 60% chance to inflict Ink with low critical hit damage.
  • Song of Kong: The same as the Brush With Mortality, except with medium cover damage and a 60% chance to inflict Freeze.
  • Candy Striper Sniper: The same as the Brush With Mortality but with medium cover damage (the rest of these have medium cover damage).
  • Torpedo: Average damage output with a 60% chance to Freeze, okay critical hit damage, and a 70% chance to Freeze agains large enemies.
  • Blooper Shooter: The same as the Torpedo, except with a 60% chance to inflict Ink, which becomes 90% against Buckler enemies.
  • Direly Dulcet Doomsayer: The same damage damage as the Brush With Mortality, with high critical hit damage and 60% chance to inflict Ink which becomes 80% against Valkyrie enemies.
  • Timber!: Great damage output with excellent critical hit damage and a 60% chance to inflict Ink.
  • First Responder: The same as the Timber! but with a 60% chance to inflict Freeze.
  • Eat Lead: The same as the Timber! but with a 90% chance to inflict Ink on Valkyries.
  • Pastel Farewell: The same as the First Responder, but with a 90% chance to inflict Freeze on Valkyries.
  • Golden Tongue: The same as the Timber!, but with a 75% chance to inflict Ink on Mid-Bosses.
  • Sixty-Watt Swat: The best Rocket by far. Higher damage and critical hit damage than any of the others, with a 60% chance to inflict Freeze that becomes 70% against Mid-Bosses.

Power Badges

In Yoshi's Woolly World, Yoshi gains access to several Power Badges that grant a variety of beneficial effects. Here is a list of all of them.

Special Items (Yoshi's Island)

  • 10-Point Star: Increases the countdown timer by 10, giving Yoshi more time to save Baby Mario. Likely has no purpose in an actual fight.
  • 20-Point Star: Just like the 10-Point Star but increases the timer by 20.
  • Anytime Egg: Gives Yoshi a full supply of 6 eggs.
  • Anytime POW: Turns all enemies near to Yoshi into stars that Yoshi can collect.
  • Winged Cloud Maker: Turns all enemies near to Yoshi into Winged Clouds.
  • Magnifying Glass: Reveals what coins are red coins and where invisible Winged Clouds are. Very similar to the "See hidden items!" Power Badge.
  • Super Green Watermelon: Gives Yoshi a green watermelon in his mouth.
  • Super Red Watermelon: Gives Yoshi a red watermelon.
  • Super Blue Watermelon: Gives Yoshi a blue watermelon.

Special Items (Mario Kart Arcade GP)

Yoshi has access to several Special Items in the Mario Kart Arcade GP series that are unique to him. Because of their nature of being used exclusively by Yoshi, I feel they should be valid for Yoshi to use in a fight. Most of these are abilities granted by other powers Yoshi has anyway.

For the Mystery Egg and Melon, what is defined as a "status effect" in Mario Kart Arcade GP isn't really clear. It doesn't appear to be an exact term within the game from what I've found, and you could argue several different things count or don't count that I can't be sure what the game counts. In general though, it seems that they mostly affect a character's sight, control, and speed, so it is likely that Mystery Egg can manipulate any of these at random and Melon can prevent them.

Note: I will not be including any special items from Mario Kart Tour. This is because while they are referred to as Special Items, they are not as exclusive as the Special Items from Double Dash or Arcade GP. Many characters on the roster share the same special item and often they are not specifically tailored to the character as they are in other Mario Kart games. Plus, several characters have costumes which change their Special Item, which leads to many characters sharing multiple items with each other and at that point I feel it is no different from just adding regular Mario Kart items (which I am obviously not doing because they are exclusively from item boxes and under no circumstances would Yoshi have them in a fight. Same goes for the items in Mario Party games outside of the exclusive Orbs from Mario Party 7).

Karts

Throughout the Mario Kart series there have been several karts that are owned by Yoshi, and as such will be included.

Balloons

Power Stars

One of the most powerful weapons in the Mario universe. Yoshi has shown the ability to create Power Stars out of mushrooms and can carry up to 150 at a time, so even if Yoshi does not start the battle with one he should be able to gain one during the battle. Power Stars have shown a massive amount of abilities within the games, and while Yoshi has not shown to weaponize these powers specifically there's nothing that implies that he wouldn't be able to. After all, Power Stars are weapons and Yoshi has been able to use some of their powers before so it makes sense. Power Stars can also be thrown as attacks that can generate explosions.

Morph Bubbles

In several Yoshi's Island games, Yoshi has bubbles he can use to transform into various other forms modeled after vehicles. These don't have many combat applicable abilities and are mostly used for mobility, but they're good to mention nonetheless. They last until Yoshi hits a Yoshi block or until the time limit ends.

Invincibility Egg

A flying egg that gives Yoshi full, seemingly unlimited invincibility and flashes him rainbow colors similar to a Super Star. However, unlike other invincibility items Yoshi does not increase his strength to one-shot every enemy, only increasing his durability. Also, this item has the caveat of only appearing after Yoshi dies 5 times

Golden Flutter Wings

A pair of wings that grants Yoshi invincibility as well as infinite hovering. Just like the Invincibility Egg, it does not increase Yoshi's strength at all, only his durability. It also only appears after Yoshi has died 3 times.

Abilities

Unique Digestive System

Yoshi has an extraordinarily long tongue and can turn what he eats into eggs. This includes nearly anything, from fruit to spinies to Luigi to giant Shy Guys several times larger than him. He can transform anything he eats into eggs, including normal objects, and the eggs can mimic attributes of the thing he ate. For example, eating a metal object makes a metal egg, and eating a crate makes a cube egg. He also can turn enemies into Star Bits by eating them

Most bizarrely, Yoshi is shown able to eat the effects on the board placed there by other players, turning them into eggs which then turn into the original item. It is likely that this would apply to characters that can use items to transform such as Super Sonic. Yoshi would likely be able to eat the transformation out of Sonic, then turn his egg into a Chaos Emerald. I have made a little animation showing what I mean.

Transmutation

Yoshi at many times has been able to use transmutation to transform enemies. He famously has used this to turn enemies and other objects into eggs, though he can also turn enemies into Star Bits. In Mario Party 2, Yoshi showed off several other applications to his transmutation, being able to transform a couple of mushrooms into a Power Star and Bowser into a frog. Several of Yoshi's items, like the Heart Fruit and several Special Items allow Yoshi to affect an entire area around him with transmutation. Yoshi also is able to reverse transmutation done to others, as eating the Egglings as apples reverses Bowser's spell put on them, and he reversed Bowser's spell that turned this Koopa Troopa into a frog.

Note: While Yoshi could be argued to have layered transmutation hax due to Bowser resisting transmutation from the Gold Flower in New Super Mario Bros. 2 (which transforms things into gold coins), I will not be doing so. Because of the naturally inconsistent nature of the Mario series, characters gain new abilities all of the time and don't show off most of their abilities usually and this includes resistances. So unless characters show their resistance in the same game or a closely-tied game, I will not be considering their hax as layered. Otherwise, it would lead to things like Shy Guys being able to affect Mario with transmutation, who has resisted transmutation attacks from Kamek, despite Kamek usually being portrayed as one of, if not the most skilled magic user in the Mario series.

Master Acrobat

Vehicle Mastery

Weapon Mastery

Despite being generally seen using eggs instead of traditional weapons, Yoshi has quite the experience wielding weapons in battle. He is very skilled in using his Rumblebangs and Rockets, machine gun-like and rocket launcher-like weapons respectively. He also has experience using hammers, guns, rapiers, boomerangs, bow and arrows, and has matched Bowser in sword combat.

Miscellaneous Hax

Note: If a notable ability doesn't show up here then it is probably listed in Equipment.

Strength

Speed

Additionally, several dimensions in the Mario universe have been called infinite in size, by reliable sources like Tippi and narration. Given their status as "parallel dimensions", it is likely that the main dimension is infinite in size as well, making every "edge of the universe" or "center of the universe" feat infinite speed, as it would require crossing an infinite distance to get there.

We also know that the center of the universe must be at least as far away, if not farther, than the edge of the universe in from Earth. We know this as in Super Mario Galaxy, the Comet Observatory is required to get to the center of the universe. However, Launch Stars are able to send Mario to the edge of the universe without the aid of the Comet Observatory, meaning that the center is likely a farther distance away from Earth than the edge of the universe is.

Durability

Weaknesses

While Yoshi is extremely powerful, he is not perfect. If he gets too hungry, he can start to hallucinate that anything right in front of him is a fruit, even going so far as to eat Luigi on accident because he thought he was holding a pineapple. If he gets attacked, he can sometimes panic and run around uncontrollably, even going as far as to run off cliffs. Quite a few of his power-ups are only temporary, and others require him to hold something in his mouth, which limits his eating capabilities.

To clear some things up...

Cosmology

You probably saw earlier that there were several references to the Dream Stone and Dark Stone that referenced the cosmology, with no elaboration as to how strong they are. That is because explaining the power of the Dream and Dark Stones is fairly complicated. The Dream Stone is made up of every happy dream and powered by every dream, and the Dark Stone is the dark counterpart to that, being formed of every nightmare. There are three games in the Mario franchise that have a focus on Dreams and Dream Worlds: Super Mario Bros. 2, Mario Party 5, and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. While they are all separate games and stories, there are consistent details about the Dream Worlds that we can use to find out how powerful the Dream Stone and Dark Stone are.

So Dream Worlds are universes, but individual Dream Worlds are also shown to be in separate dimensions, as Zeekeeper is said to be crossing through dimensions in his boss fight in the Dream World. Additionally, in order for Kamek to go to another dream, he had to go through the real world, again indicating that they are in separate dimensional spaces.

So now that we've established that individual Dreams are entire universes, separate from one-another, but how many are there powering the Dream and Dark Stone?

Well to start, BS Super Mario USA, the sequel to Super Mario Bros. 2, states that there are as many Subcons as there are people dreaming. In addition, other games say that many new dreams arrive at the Dream Depot every day, and it is shown that every time someone falls asleep a new Dream World is created. So at bare minimum, there'd be as many dreams as people who sleep in the Mario universe, so how many is that? Well, as mentioned above in the Speed section, the Mario universe has many statements to being infinite in size, from reliable sources like Tippi, the Star Spirits, and narration. On its own, that doesn't mean there are automatically infinite dreams. However, an alien from Super Paper Mario, who Tippi states drives his thoughts through endless space (meaning he knows a lot about the universe), says that the infinite space is filled with dreams. This would, theoretically, mean that there are an infinite amount of dreams.

There is more to back this up, as Paint is shown to be a sentient concept. It is shown to have a mind of its own and is able to fall asleep, so it should be capable of creating Dream Worlds like everything else. This is important as Paint is shown to make up everything, both matter as well as empty space. Now I am not saying that each individual drop of Paint dreams, but every object that has Paint should be able to dream. This is backed up further by Paint being stated to give life to the world, and without Paint things cannot be alive. This would mean that there doesn't need to be an infinite amount of beings, or even an infinite amount of objects, as empty space would logically fill up the rest of an infinite universe, and that is shown to have Paint as well. This would line up with what the alien said that the infinite space is filled with dreams.

It should also be noted that Paint is shown to work the exact same way in alternate, parallel universes, so dimensions like Outer Space and the Painting Worlds would also be contributing to these dreams.

However, this is not the end of it. It is shown that characters who are currently in a Dream World are still able to fall asleep and create new Dream Worlds on top of that. Dream Worlds naturally have many characters and creatures native to them, as well as having a Day/Night cycle and being stated to be infinite in size, should mean that, like the real world, dreams themselves have the ability to create an infinite amount of Dream Worlds on top of that. Thus solidifying the number of Dream Worlds to be infinite.

Now I am aware this sounds like me taking specific things from several different games and combining them in a way that was never intended, and that is a fair assumption. However, all of the concepts I have brought up are important to their game, and even though they likely were never meant to overlap with stuff from other games, that doesn't mean that they don't exist outside the scope of that game. Within the Mario universe, all of these things are fact, we just only focus on one idea at a time because that's how these are designed. I am not adding anything that wasn't there already, I am simply drawing a logical conclusion based on all the evidence from the games.

  • Dimensions being infinite in size is important to Super Paper Mario
  • Dream Worlds being plentiful is important to Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
  • Paint being literally everywhere is important to Paper Mario Color Splash

And it just so happens that they line up with each other well, with statements from Super Paper Mario and Mario Party 5 just adding more consistency to this line of reasoning.

In summary, there is more than enough reason to believe that the number of Dream Worlds powering the Dream Stone is infinite.

How does it scale + is it consistent?

As you've seen in the Feats section, there are several times where characters should scale to the Dream Stone or Dark Stone. Most famously, there is Mario and Luigi defeating Dreamy Bowser, surviving his attacks and being able to harm him. Dreamy Bowser is being powered by the full power of the Dream Stone. Now this is typically seen as just an outlier on most vs sites, but is actually consistent with other showings throughout the game.

As you can see, there are many times that the characters do something that would let them scale to the full power of the Dream Stone. In my opinion it is too much to be considered an outlier and is quite consistent for characters to scale to this level.

But shouldn't Dreamy Bowser be much stronger than regular Bowser?

Not really. Bowser has several forms throughout the series that, logically, should probably be stronger than base Bowser, and yet characters are still able to keep up and fight them. One good example is Giant Bowser. I've already gone over Yoshi being able to hurt him by throwing eggs, as well as taking his attacks, in both Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi's New Island, but there's also Mario physically being strong enough to hurt him in Super Mario Galaxy 2, and characters being able to survive hits from the Junior Clown Car while identical attacks could hurt and eventually take out Giant Bowser in New Super Mario Bros. U. Other "stronger" forms, like MegaDragonBowser, Grand Star Bowser, Black Paint Bowser, Bowcien, and Shiny RoboBowser fall into this as well, with Mario and others still able to keep up with these forms.

There is clear precedent for Bowser to scale to his "stronger" forms, as weird as it may seem. Dreamy Bowser himself makes sense to not be drastically stronger than base Bowser, since the point of getting the Dream Stone wasn't for a power-amp, it was for it's wish-granting abilities, which is clearly what Bowser was planning to use the Dream Stone for anyway.

Why are you using feats from Paper Mario?

So I do plan on having a blog eventually that will go in depth on what I consider canon and non-canon for the Mario series and why that is, but I figured I should talk about Paper Mario specifically as I am guessing that will be the most controversial inclusion.

I don't want to spend too much time on this, so if you're curious read this post on Reddit I wrote about Paper Mario being canon, as well as Mario and "Paper Mario" (from the Paper Mario games) being the same character, as well as anyone else from those games. The Paper characters we see in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam are not the same characters as the ones from the Paper Mario series, as their appearances in the game are inconsistent with portrayals in Paper Mario Sticker Star. I promise I will go over all of these in more detail eventually on a future blog.

If you need any more evidence, Shigeru Miyamoto himself has stated that Mario and Paper Mario are the same characters, so there's not much to argue against.

Immeasurable speed Mario characters?

Maybe? It's entirely possible, but I don't fully buy into it, which is why it's not in the speed section. Basically, the argument is this: The worlds in Super Mario Galaxy 2 are separated in both space and time, and while in the cutscene Starship Mario is going through a portal, afterwards it appears to not need it to travel between worlds. This would mean that it would be traveling beyond space and time, and thus immeasurable speed. However, this is likely not how it is actually happening despite appearing as such. This is because, while the Grand World Map shows them not needing a portal, the World Map still requires Mario to go through portals. Additionally, when referring to the Grand World Map, Lubba states that the power of the Grand Stars is what allows you to travel through space and time. This is important because unlike the Power Stars, the Grand Stars are not used as fuel for Starship Mario. Instead they are used to create the portals, and that is it. The "power of the Grand Stars" is exclusively talking about the portals made, so moving on the Grand World Map still requires Starship Mario to go through portals even if it isn't explicitly shown.

There's also arguments to be made for moving within "timeless voids" or "realms beyond time and space", which are abundant in the Mario series. Mario can move in the Woah Zone, which is a dimension beyond space. Luigi moves in the Rapturous Ruins, where time and space are lost to nothingness. Mario can move in the area where he uses Cutout, which is transcendent to space and time. However, I am not confident in calling any of these truly immeasurable speed feats. At best, I feel they are proving to give these characters a resistance to time manipulation, but not outright immeasurable speed. In general fiction doesn't usually portray "timeless voids" the same way as moving in stopped time, which would realistically only be a speed feat if the character was doing it through sheer speed (for example, Archie Sonic) and otherwise would again be just a resistance to time stop.

Cutout is probably the best argument since it actively "transcends time and space", but that's likely just a byproduct of the specific move and not actually done through sheer speed. If someone reacted to Mario doing it, then yeah I could see immeasurable speed scaling to other characters (Like Dante from DMC reacting to Argosax's teleport which similarly transcends time and distance), but no one does that, and in fact everyone else always stays frozen in time

Tl;dr - I don't buy immeasurable speed Mario characters, and they should only be used as an absolute extreme highball.

Summary

  • Large amount of experience when composited with all Yoshis
  • Eggs are extremely versatile weaponry
  • Doesn't actually need to eat an opponent to get more eggs
  • Several abilities like transmutation can instantly end a fight
  • Power Stars grant a wide variety of powers, and he can create them anytime he wants
  • Several ways of increasing his physical stats
  • Has a giant mech like what the heck that's so cool
  • Calls himself a Space Dragon
  • Not the step-dad, but the dad that stepped up

Disadvantages:

  • Can be somewhat cowardice sometimes
  • His hunger can get the better of him
  • Many of his power-ups overlap or are straight-up irrelevant
  • Several power-ups are only temporary
  • Smash gameplay is incredibly one-note
  • Got completely shafted in the Mario Movie
  • Tax fraud

Hey! It's my first actual blog post here. This was really fun to make and I plan to make more of these in the future. Though I won't just do Mario characters, there'll be a good variety and there won't necessarily be a theme to them outside of just "characters I want to talk about". Next one will probably be over Dr. Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Ferb, so be on the look out for that whenever it eventually comes out. Thanks for reading, and I hope you learned something about Yoshi you didn't know before. See y'all next time!

How Powerful is Bowser?

My stance on Mario canon (for versus debating)
